United, Western Mass Battle to Draw

Ludlow, MAMass United FC Pro began their 2015 Spring American Soccer League schedule on Saturday night, drawing with host Western Mass PSC 1-1 at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, MA. Both sides had several seemingly golden chances to take the lead but neither could find the net for a second time. Scoring was opened by Western Mass’ Chris Roswess, a frequent thorn in United’s side, in the 21st minute when a thru ball from Dan Fabian found him streaking towards goal and a defenseless United keeper Malcolm Cheney, who had 10 saves on the night. Twenty minutes later Rigoberto Jiminez pulled United even on a free kick from 30 yards that found its way past Western Mass keeper Jose Silva.
Although the scoring was over by halftime, a lot of the action was still to come. A fifteen minute stretch saw United control possession and come within inches of taking the lead. While the following 10 minutes were dominated by Western Mass, who in their best chance of the stretch were denied by the woodwork. Both clubs had what seemed sure goals blocked by defenders at the line, with United newcomer Matthew Keys streaking across the 6 yd box for a game-saving play. The match included 28 fouls and five cards, including a highly disputable second yellow to United defender Kamali Webson in the final minute.
