United Takes Derby

Cumberland, RIMass United FC Pro scored in the 86th minute on Saturday to thwart a comeback bid by Rhode Island Oceaneers and take a 3-2 win. United’s Michael Rincon got the first and third goals, sandwiched around a beautiful goal by Carlos Diniz. Rhode Island turned the game around late, taking advantage of United’s more defensive posture after taking the two-goal lead, with goals by Anthony Baumann and Brian Grisell in the 78th and 82nd minutes, respectively.
United took the lead in the 38th minute when Rigoberto Jiminez led Michael Rincon into open space beautifully and he raced past the Oceaneers defenders to put it home. The 1-0 halftime lead for United may have been slightly against the flow of play but the Riders were dangerously opportunistic throughout the match and keeper Malcolm Cheney continued to shine. Rincon’s speed and determination would produce the highlight of the night for United when after receiving a pass near midfield he sprinted and sidestepped his way into the box to the right of Oceaneers keeper Christopher Moura and slid it past him to save the three points for United.
Next up for United is our home opener against Philadelphia Fury at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville on Saturday night at 7:15. The Oceaneers have a week off to stew and them come north for the return fixture on May 23rd. Tickets for all ASL games are available at aslsoccer.org.
