Newton, MA – Mass United advanced to the state final of the USASA National Amateur Cup on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Mass Premier Soccer (MPS). United jumped into the lead within moments when Donnelly Cup hat-trick hero Braima Samati began another special night with his first of three goals, and were able to hold off a determined MPS to claim the victory. The Riders opponent in the state final will be Southie FC, who defeated Valeo FC in penalty kicks after fighting back to pull even in the final minutes.
After jumping into the lead United was forced to withstand a seige in their own end as MPS pulled even 10 minutes later and continued to push for the lead. But it was United who would get that lead at around the 30-minute mark when Salvatore Castro sent a beautiful pass to Samati (who I think we should maybe call the Hat-Trick Man from now on) in the box and the winger put it away for his second goal. An even final fifteen minutes of the half sent United into the break happy with the scoreboard, if not with their play overall.
The second half picked up where the first left off but not for long. Within a few minutes MPS had reasserted control of possession and were well up on shots and corner kicks on the night. But United’s team defense, along with keeper Reynato Barbosa Paiva, proved to be up to the task, disrupting the MPS attack just enough to keep the lead. Then thirty minutes in the Hat-Trick Man struck again on the counter attack and United had the breathing room they craved. The Riders were quickly back on the defensive but their hard working defense was too much for MPS to break.
United will face Southie FC in the state final on November 16th or 17th, full details to come.
