Ludlow, MA- Mass United FC North Shore took the nearly state-wide journey to Ludlow to face the Western Mass Pioneers in venerated Lusitano Stadium and made the ride worthwhile with a 2-1 win. The Riders took the lead in the 12th minute when midfielder Marc Djessouho was pulled down in the box and took the penalty himself, giving United the early lead. The Pioneers would even the scoreline in the 63rd minute only to cede the eventual winner on an own goal four minutes later.
Early action in the contest was back and forth and very exciting, as both sides would continue to pile up the chances but with an errant pass here and a solid save there, the back of the net would not be found again until the Pioneer equalizer. It was a beautifully played long ball that gave the Pioneers their goal, leaving United keeper Oli Gunnersson alone to deal with the breakaway. But the score would only briefly remain even. In the 67th minute, after a tremendous build up by United, a shot that was going to be wide and likely out for a goal kick was put into the net by a sliding Pioneer defender attempting a clearance. Immediately the Pioneers began pushing for another equalizer but they would be denied by timely tackles, an even more timely clearance of the line by a United defender, and more than one ringing save by the woodwork.
