Taunton, MA.- Mass United (0-1-3, 3pts) came up on the short end of a 2-1 scoreline against AC Crusaders (2-4-0, 6 pts) of New Jersey after going down a man early in the second half. It was United’s first defeat of the American Soccer League season. United took the lead shortly before halftime thanks to Carlos Diniz and Moises Lopes after Lopes sent Diniz to the races with a beautiful through ball. Diniz sprinted past the Crusader defenders and finished perfectly for the lead.
It was early on second half that the game took a turn, with a poor pass back to the defense sending the Crusader forward in alone. United defender Kamali Webson raced back but his tackle would earn him a red card and give AC a penalty kick, which was converted for the equalizer. A buoyed Crusader side pushed to take the lead and would be rewarded for their efforts on a seeing-eye header that bounced past United keeper Oli Gunnerson and just inside the post. Now faced with a one-goal deficit United would find their 10-man-rhythm and create several opportunities to even the score, including being awarded a PK of their own minutes after falling behind. But none of these opportunities would come to fruition and the night would end in frustration.
United will have just over two weeks to regroup before taking on Rhode Island Oceaneers on October 4th in Cranston, which will be the first ever match between the clubs. The Oceaneers have played just one match to-date, a 2-0 loss to Western Mass PSC. In another first for the match, it will be the first New England Derby between these clubs.
