The Riders Notebook – Oct 7

Another Step Closer…

Mass United’s Bay State Soccer League squad moved into second place after a forfeit by Saturday’s opponent, Analog. The ‘win’, listed as 3-0, gives United 24 points and leaves them two points behind Middlesex, who also earned 3 points last weekend. Next up for United is Rovers FC on Saturday, followed by FC Americana on the 15th. While currently in the “promotion zone”, taking all 6 points from those matches is imperative for the Riders with an October 22nd date with Middlesex looming in the distance.

The result wasn’t so kind in the Massachusetts State Soccer League, however. Our MSSL’ers lost to West Africans United on Sunday by a score of 5-2. The poor result doesn’t mean that United didn’t gain in the MSSL though. Two separate disputes were settled last week, giving United 2 more wins and six more points. Although the added points don’t change the Riders’ place in the standings, it did make a mid-table finish much more possible.

In other MSSL news, our friends at FC Lynn surged into first place with a 5-2 win over AC Boston on Sunday, running their current streak to 7 games unbeaten with 6 wins. FCL has two matches remaining, their final game at Manning Field for the season against Medway FC on Sunday at 7pm, and the season finale on October 16th v West Africans United, how are also attempting to win promotion and are tied for third with AC Boston.

Staying With The Family…

Newly re-signed midfielders Chris Bedi (L) & John Bavota.

Mass United has resigned four players from the 2011 National Premier Soccer League team. Midfielders John Bavota, Christopher Bedi and Austin Reed, along with keeper Andrew Trice, will all be back for next season. I spoke with Messers Bavota and Bedi, who both expressed their excitement for the upcoming NPSL season. “I think next season, building off the core players here, we can really make an impact going into the 2012 season,” said Bavota. Christopher Bedi, originally from Cincinnati, said, “this upcoming year is exciting for us. We have more knowledge about the type of competition we will be facing and have a better idea on how we need to train. Most of our teammates are resigning which is great because we can continue to improve our team chemistry.”
