MSSL Cup Hopes Washed Away

Boston, MAMass United‘s triple dream ended on Sunday with a rain-soaked 2-1 loss to Green Briar FC in the MSSL Cup Semi Final at Millennium Park in West Roxbury. The surprising result came on the strength of two perfectly placed crosses and headers in the second half after Rigoberto Jiminez had given United a lead early in the frame. Green Briar will face Celtic FC for the MSSL Cup, likely in two weeks.

United started the match on their heels as Green Briar was more aggressive and kept the Riders pinned in their own end for much of the first 10 minutes. Things evened out after that and there were some good opportunities but both sides continually came up short in the offensive third. Solid defense by both sides stifled attacks before they could get any real steam and was just as responsible as the rain for the lack of finishing.

When Rigoberto Jiminez broke the deadlock an enlivened United pushed for more and very nearly got a second, but before they could give themselves some breathing room Green Briar equalized. A free kick from 25 yards out or so was sent perfectly into the box where it was headed home and United’s advantage was gone. Ten minutes later, Green Briar had the lead.

Green Briar used their skill in the air once again to take the lead, this time from a corner kick. As the ball bounced into the net after being headed down both benches exploded, one in joy, the other in disbelief. After taking a few minutes to regroup United turned up the pressure looking to force extra time. They would come as close as possible but could not find the right touch at the right moment to make it happen. After hitting the post, the crossbar, and having a header from three feet out sail over the net in the waning moments, one can only conclude that it simply was not to be.
