Newton, MA – Mass United FC Lynn went into the final game of their Massachusetts State Soccer League season needing a win or tie to claim the title and answered the call in spectacular fashion, with a 5-0 drubbing of sister-club Albania United SC. The Riders wasted no time in getting to their task, starting strong and keeping Albania in their own end for much of the first 10 minutes. The scoring was opened at around the 15 minute mark when a long pass from center back Kareem Smith found Rigoberto Jiminez on the left wing and he easily evaded a defender to slot it past the Albania keeper for the one-goal lead.
The lead was doubled fifteen minutes later, this time it was Jiminez making the pass, which found Salvatore Castro in the box for a two-goal lead. First half scoring concluded just before the break when a long run of United possession in Albania’s end was capped by a Murilo Zanette goal. Despite having a three-goal halftime lead, there were not a lot of smiles to be seen. The task was not yet complete.
It only took a few minutes for United to put any hopes Albania had of a second half comeback to rest by netting a fourth and making the rest of the half a countdown to coronation. As the half wore on United continued to dominate and were within inches of extending the lead on several occasions. When Mikhaeil Tadros finally made it 5-0 with only a few minutes remaining the celebrating began in earnest.
With the final whistle players and coaches, along with fans and family, joyously crowded onto the field, smiles and hugs all around. Soon to follow was the moment that all the players and coaches had worked so hard for. League Vice-President Michael Graham presented the championship trophy to squad captain Coolie Durham who raised it and yelled out in triumph as he was swarmed by his teammates.
