Final Tune-up Washed Out

Mass United played its final pre-season game of the year at Lynn’s Manning Field on Saturday against Seacoast United but it didn’t last very long; officials were forced to end the game with 30 minutes remaining due to lightning. The shortened game’s lone goal came with a few minutes left in the first half on a marvelous strike by Seacoast’s Lucas Militao from near the edge of the box to the right of keeper, Adam Khaw.
You could feel the intensity of the players despite the fact that it was a pre-season match as for many of them it was the final opportunity to earn a spot on the roster. This intensity didn’t lead to offense however, as much of the play in the first half was in the middle third of the pitch, with few scoring opportunities for either team. So much so that I remember thinking it’s probably a good thing this is on turf, the middle of the pitch would have been brown by the end of the game. Things did open up some towards the end of the half, as some crisper passing and maybe a few tired legs created a little more room out there. Unfortunately for the Riders, it was Seacoast that was able to take advantage.
These two squads face off again next Saturday at 3pm at Manning Field in the National Premiere Soccer League debut for both teams. For Mass United, it’s the first game of a weekend double-header which culminates in a visit by 2-time U.S. Open Cup winners Brooklyn Italians on Sunday at 5pm, also at Manning Field. Tickets are available for both games, individually or as a discounted 2-game package. To purchase tickets online, click here.
