Landover, MD- Mass United (0-4-2, 4 pts) faced Evergreen Diplomats (2-0-4, 6 pts) on Saturday night, storming back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the match before conceding the winner in the 84th minute for a 3-2 final. A sluggish start would haunt United, with the Diplomats taking a 2-goal lead on strikes by Eddie Campbell (6th minute) and Brian Graham (35th) from a perfect cross by Campbell. Evergreen enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in shots at halftime.
The second half was an entirely different animal however, as United came out strong and pressured Evergreen throughout the half en route to equalizing in the 79th minute. It took United less than five minutes to get on the board thanks to a wonderfully placed shot from Charlie McMahon that looped over the keeper Chris Torres and scraped the bar on its way into the net. A rejuvenated United would turn up the heat even more as they continued to keep their opponents on their heels.
Carlos Diniz would notch the second goal for United, heading in a corner kick in the 79th minute and setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Unfortunately, United would come up on the wrong side of the drama, conceding the winner to Evergreen and forward Brian Davis in the 84th minute. Despite nearly six minutes of added time and several chances to get back even United couldn’t find another equalizer before the final whistle.
Next up for United is another speedy squad, Ironbound Soul SC (2-2-1, 8 pts). The first meeting between the sides was an action-packed 1-1 draw, which included the first ever goal scored for the newly created club from New Jersey. Ironbound last played on October 5th, a 4-1 thrashing of AC Crusaders (2-1-6, 7 pts) on the road.
