Ludlow, MA- Mass United criss-crossed the state on Saturday to take on Western Mass, coming away with a point and a 1-1 draw. Western Mass started strong, putting pressure on United and taking an early lead in the 7th minute when Chris Roswess converted a cross from Luke Perry. A suddenly awakened United squad would quickly even the score a minute later but not in the usual way. An errant clearance header by a Western Mass defender went back towards goal and looped over a diving Warren Gross, bouncing into the net.
Western Mass continued to threaten but could not get another past United keeper Oli Gunnerson, who had 6 saves on the night. Halftime adjustments by United Head Coach Stefano Franciosa proved effective, with the defense closing off Western Mass runs and the offense creating more possession and pressure from it. A more balanced, action-packed second half did not bring a winner for either team.
The match marked the return of professional soccer to Lusitano Stadium and the American Soccer League debut for Western Mass.
