Mass United took a 1-0 lead into halftime but were unable to hold on, falling to the New York Red Bulls 2-1 in Newark, NJ, in National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) play. The match started with United picking up where they left off yesterday, controlling the tempo early on the way to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The goal came on a beautiful feed from United’s Denivaldo DaSilva to winger John Bavota, who scored his second goal in as many games. What looked to be a second goal (a beautiful cross and volley between Bavota and DaSilva. Highlight reel stuff.) for United was nullified in the 38th minute by an offside call that was, to the naked eye, incredibly close.
The second half opened with a reawakened Red Bulls squad controlling possession and quickly turning that pressure into a goal after a, let’s say questionable, foul and yellow card issued to United’s Daniel Antonio Jr. in the box for pre-free kick maneuvering. Kemal Gurel converted the penalty and we were even at 1-all in the 49th minute. New York grabbed the lead in the 60th minute and were able to withstand United’s increasing pressure the rest of the match.
