Mass United faces a big test this weekend when they hit the road for two matches against National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) foes, and conference leaders, Brooklyn Italians (4-0-0, 12 pts) on Saturday and New York Red Bulls (NYRB) (2-0-0, 6 pts) on Sunday. United’s opponents are first and second, respectively, in the NPSL Northeast – Atlantic Conference and have yet to drop points this season in league play. For Brooklyn, 3 of those points came at United’s expense. The Riders dropped their season opener to the Italians, 4-1. Brooklyn is coming off a loss, however, after dropping a 3-0 decision to the Rochester Rhinos of USL-PRO in the 2nd round of the US Open Cup.
United is looking to build off of a very well-played 2-1 win over FC New York last weekend and will be hoping to continue their excellent form; form that will be needed against these two very talented squads. While the road was not exactly friendly last season, this year’s squad is ready for the challenge. “I believe 2012 is our impact season,” said United midfielder and team captain, John Bavota. “Through hard work, perseverance and sacrifice we will come out on top.”
Perseverance will indeed be needed, as there will be no break for United upon returning home. The first New England Derby of 2012 looms on the horizon with a special Wednesday night match against New Hampshire rivals Seacoast United Phantoms (0-1-1, 1 pt). Tickets for the Seacoast United match and all remaining NPSL matches can be purchased in our TICKETS section or at the gate on game day.
