Mass United FC, the Riders, begins their 2011 campaign as they welcome Central Connecticut State University (Div. 1) on April 27th for an exhibition match in Lawrence, MA. Despite coming off a disappointing season (4-10-3), CCSU, led by senior Robert Cavener, a three-time selection for the NSCAA All-Region team, and award-winning coach Shaun Green, is sure to be a stiff test for the Riders. The Blue Devils are only a few years removed from their most recent NorthEast Conference title and hungry to regain their status as national championship contender by building on their improved play at the end of last season. More information on the Blue Devils can be found at http://www.soccerccsu.com/.
The Riders are hoping to build on amateur success as they prepare for their fast-approaching debut in the National Premier Soccer League. “The game will be an opportunity for us to showcase some of our long serving talent in addition to giving our fringe players a run out against a formidable and well respected opponent” said United’s General Manager, Jonathan Beck. “We look forward to establishing a good relationship with CCSU in terms of player movement and opportunities, also perhaps implementing programs that can be mutually beneficial down the road.”
The Riders, and coach Jim Antonakas, begin their NPSL schedule with a weekend doubleheader against Seacoast United (NH) on May 14th and Brooklyn Italians on the 15th, with both games at Manning Field in Lynn, MA.
